Hogweed shootsSourdough & Foraging Taster Workshops

Due to popular demand the Taster workshops have now been split into separate Sourdough & Foraging sessions.  All proceeds from the foraging workshops will go back to support the running & maintenance of Springburn Gardens Association.  Details of each workshop are as follows;

The sourdough taster sessions are split into 2 categories, bread & cakes & desserts. You will leave both workshops with your own starter to take away & cultivate.

The sourdough bread workshops will cover different types of flours & the way they behave when used to bake loaves.  You will make up your own sourdough to take away with you & bake at home as well as shaping & preparing some sourdough to eat with our lunch .

The sourdough cakes & desserts workshops will look at baking a variety of cakes & desserts using a sourdough starter instead of eggs & all of these sessions will be vegan.   After support will be given so if you experience any hitches you can be rest assured that help will be on hand.  Everything you bake on the day, will be going home with you.  A few words of caution however, regarding the cakes & desserts.  This is NOT a healthy raw vegan workshop.  I want to enjoy cakes & desserts which taste the way my Grandmother used to make them & she was an excellent baker.  They were meltingly moreish & totally tasty & comforting, but healthy they certainly weren't.  That said, this kind of food is eaten as a treat & it is surely good for our soul to be decadent now & again.

A light lunch will be provided at both workshops, ( I don't want you leaving hungry!), some of which you will have made yourselves during the workshop.

As gardeners we tend to spend quite a bit of time pulling & digging out unwanted "weeds" from our gardens & veg plots, but have you ever thought about what these unwanted visitors could actually do for us? Many of these plants were traditionally eaten & several of them would be classed as super foods were they sold in supermarkets.  They have a host of proven medicinal uses, many of which are still used today.

So, with this is mind we will explore a variety of common "weeds" & their uses.  We will gather & use them to prepare some delicious food & discuss their benefits, both nutritionally & medicinally.  Dependent upon what is in season at the time, you will leave with some foraged foods which you will have prepared yourself as well as gathering & making some of our lunch, (plus notes on what we picked & what to do with them).  Be prepared to get stuck in & gather & make your own foraged food.

A seasonal main course will be served for lunch, plus a seasonal dessert, both with a foraged twist, along with plenty of refreshments throughout the course of the session. You will be making the starters with the ingredients we have gathered on site  You won't be leaving hungry!

We will be exploring our wonderful heritage allotment site & you will have an opportunity to see how we are planning to develop a nature reserve on site, to benefit the local community. There will also be an opportunity to meet some of the plot holders & when she is available, Delia, our resident Bee keeper will be on hand to chat about her wonderful bees.
